Day 1 Sendoff!

Day 1: San Francisco, CA ➡️ Yuba City, CA

Total Mileage: 179.8 Miles

Running Mileage: 7.5 Miles

Overall Running Mileage: 7.5 Miles

Ahh can’t believe it’s here!

Woke up at 5am, chalked our van (don’t worry, we will give them a refresh and make them look sooo much cooler than it already is), and bussed on over to Crissy Beach, our sendoff location.

Took lots of photos along Crissy Beach.

Rachele, my first running buddy! All females cuz the males had to get one so right back at ’em.

Running across Golden Gate Bridge with my teammates was so inspiring and emotionally moving. Especially with our chant. It hit me then that a) we are going to do this. Run across the country. And b) it’s going to be a fantastic summer with my teammates. I love the energy they bring, the kindness they show towards each other and strangers, and the willingness to learn from each other.

And more photos after we crossed.

Since Baltimore and NY both shared the same first 120 miles of travel, we split it into fourths.

Rachel (my co-trip director!) and I decided to split up the run into two sections for the bans to break up the heat wave coming in. We each did around 30 miles of the shared 120, and then around another 30 of our New York specific route.

However, it was one of the hottest recorded days in CA in 3 years… so I ended up making the call in my van to shuttle most of the second half of our route due to the extreme heat. I tried running my 2 miles in it, and really felt it (but my partner Rachele was awesome and pushed me to complete the run at an average of 8:45 mile pace).

Overall, I learned some lessons about safety on the trip. I can’t wait to get to know people better and hear why they run 4K!
